SHAM is MASH with the four letters rearranged: Shack, House, Apartment, Mansion. Same game, same rules. The difference is that this spelling accidentally rates the accuracy of its own predictions. Play MASH online free and you've played SHAM.
The acronym reviews itself
A sham is a fraud. Something wearing the costume of the real thing. MASH decides who you'll marry by counting the loops in a spiral you drew on the back of a math worksheet, so the label is fair. Nobody has ever audited the results. Nobody has asked to.
Why the letters get shuffled
The four dwellings don't have a fixed order on the page. Write the mansion first and you get MASH. Write the house first and you get HAMS. Write the shack first and you get SHAM, which tells you a fair amount about the person holding the pen. MASH is the oldest and most common spelling, and it's the one this site and its apps use.
Listing the shack first is a choice
Most people list the mansion first and leave the shack for last. Putting the shack up front changes the mood of the whole page. You start out braced for the worst, and anything above a shack feels like a win. It's arguably the healthier way to play.
What each letter means
Shack means one room and a roof with opinions. House is fine. Perfectly fine. Nobody has ever told a good story about landing on the house. Apartment gets you a landlord you've never met and a neighbor who practices drums at 11pm. Mansion is what everyone quietly hopes the spiral lands on, which is exactly why the shack is funnier.
Does listing the shack first make a shack more likely?
No. Sorry. You cross out options by counting to a number you got from a spiral, not by which letter you wrote down first. Shack, House, Apartment, Mansion gives you the same odds as Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House. If you end up in the shack, that's between you and the spiral. The other ways people spell it
MASH (Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House) is what the app and this site use. M.A.S.H., with periods between the letters, is how older paper games sometimes wrote it. HAMS puts the house first. SHAM puts the shack first. Some people skip the acronym entirely and just write out Mansion Apartment Shack House.
How a round works
- Write Shack, House, Apartment, Mansion across the top of a page, or open the browser version and skip the handwriting.
- Add more categories: who you'll marry, how many kids you'll have, what car you'll drive.
- Fill in four options per category. At least one of them has to be genuinely upsetting or you've wasted the round.
- Draw a spiral. Have a friend say stop, then count the lines. That's your magic number.
- Count through the options and cross one off every time you hit the magic number, until one survives in each category.
